Global Eye - The three characters Harry, Cecile and Jack (the parrot) guide pupils around this colourful online version of the CDROM and magazine. Undoubtedly coming from a commercial angle (allbeit subtly), but some very valuable and child-friendly information here.

NOVA Online - Lost on Everest - Climb the tallest mountain in the world without leaving the classroom! Recommended for geography QCA Unit 15 (the mountain environment), the virtual reality view from the summit is particularly good. You will need to download QuickTime VR to view this, however.

GIS in UK School Education - A useful starting point for those interested in Geographical Information Sysytems (GIS) from the Universtity of Aberdeen.

Africam - The world's first virtual safari - I love the idea of this site, even if when I visited it there appeared to be no animals whatsoever in Africa! Never-the-less, I'll be sure to return to look again at the live images from the mobile and static webcams (but perhaps during the day, this time...). Free registration required.

The National Trust - Plan educational visits, find resources to support curriculum work and play games in the interactive sections.

Images of England - After free registration, visitors can search for and use images from this site (for study). Buildings can be searched for by county, building type or period. For example, a search for 'defense' reveals lots of castles. The site is owned and maintained by English Heritage.

Young Transnet - Young TransNet uses IT and the Internet to assist children and young people in transport research and action. The long term aim of Young TransNet is to increase walking, cycling and the use of public transport, and to reduce motor traffic.

UpMyStreet - Rapidly find information about the services in your area by entering your postcode. Also useful for finding out about nearby restaurants!

Planet Energy - Key Stage 2 children can click on the '7-11 years old' link to go on a trail in search of renewable energy. Definitely aimed at children from the Dti. Teachers should click on the link for them for a giggle - the Energy Lords salute you!

Eco Schools - The Kids Zone was being developed when schoolsource reviewd this NGfL registered site, but it looks very promising. Aims to teach pupils about key environmental themes through online games and activities.

Environment Agency - Kids - Lots here, inlcuding animations, games, screensavers as well as facts and figures about our impact upon the environment.

Kids Organic Club - Developed in order to encourage children to eat organic food by providing 'balanced and factual' information about how intensive farming methods damages the enviroment along with games and information. In fact, any site that encourages children to eat better than most currently do gets my thumbs-up...

Southampton University's environmental database for schools - Full of factual, easy-reading information about pretty much all aspects of the environment.

Wilderness Challenge - An online newspaper for children, the theme being the environment.

National Geographic Online - The home page of the National Geographic magazine where you can find maps, photography and more. The Rain Forest at Night feature is excellent. It contains a virtual rainforest at night to explore from canopy to floor with a beam of light.

Earthshots - Satellite images of environmental change. For example images of Mozambique before and after independence, civil war, famine and drought between 1973 and 1995. This site is maintained by the US Government.

Atlapedia Online - Information about countries in an A-Z containing facts, figures and environmental data etc. as well as maps of the world.

Cadbury Learning Zone - This site has sections on maths and history, but particularly recommended are the environmental pages (although one or two of their facts are a little suspect...I believe that the people of Diss would be alarmed to know that they live in Fenland!).

HSBC Education - Children can follow the progress of yacht skipper Graham Dalton as he takes on the Around Alone 2002 Yacht Race, which started on September 15th and finishes in April 2003. After registering, children can email Graham and watch video clips of this tough challenge, learning about wildlife, weather, nutrition and culture across five continents.

The Geographical Association (GA) - This site is aimed at teachers, providing information and resources such as books and a journal to support geography teaching at every phase.

Houses Around the World - A simple and straight-forward page showing pictures of houses in different countries. Excellent for the D&T 'shelters' topic!!

The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site - Learn about the Dorset and Devonshire coast line where the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous periods are abundantly represented, as well as the dinosaurs that lived there.

MultiMap - This site has come to represent the standard in online mapping, and contains detailed maps of the UK and information about mapping. Some aerial photos are also available from your postcode as well as route planners.

OnlineWeather.com - Weather forecasts and content feeds for the UK, Ireland and the world. Take a look for yourself with online webcams around the UK.

OXFAM - The homepage of OXFAM, including lots of information about sustainable development. Of particular interest may be the Cool Planet website. This is the part of OXFAM's website that is intended for use by teachers. It says that is "aims to bring the global dimension to the classroom, using the concept of Global Citizenship". It contains information about the work of the organisation, as well as lesson plans and other resources.

Children's Atlas - An online atlas for children. A little patience is needed with this website as it is rather graphics-heavy. Furthermore, Northern Europe seems to be slightly temperamental..

TOP LINK! Canterbury Environmental Education Centre - The website of the Canterbury Broak Oak Lane nature reserve. Take a virtual pond dip and look at sculptures created by Paul Goodrick for the reserve. Find out about the parts of a plant and then take a quiz to see how much you know! Explore grassland and woodland as well as taking virtual tours of the reserves Sunrise and Kingfisher trails. A fantastic site surpassed only by a visit to the reserve itself! Horton Kirby Environmental Education Centre, Kent - A similar site to Broad Oak Lane Reserve, and also part of Naturegrid. Less interactive than Canterbury's site.

Kent Wildlife Trust - Click on 'Education' to find out about planning an educational visit to a Kent Wildlife Trust education site.

Dundee Satellite Receiving Station - Dundee Satellite Receiving Station, Dundee University, UK, maintains an up-to-date archive of images from NOAA, SeaStar, Terra and Aqua polar orbiting satellites. Images from geostationary satellites covering the whole earth are also available. Registration is free and the images are free!

METEOSAT Weather Satellite Images from the University of Nottingham - These pages provide easy access to the very latest wefax images transmitted by the Meteosat satellite. These images are generally very up-to-date and look just like the ones you see on the TV!

WeatherCams across the USA - This page provides access to over 800 weather cameras across North America. They are not all reliable, but most give some great views.

Water In Schools - Thames Water - Thames Water has an excellent range of resources for schools, pupils, adults, teachers and parents to support the teaching and learning about water. These educational materials can be used within school, with many suitable for homework help.

The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society - The global voice for the protection of whales and dolphins and their environment.

WWfLearning.co.uk - World Wildlife fund in the UK: a communications point, primarily aimed at teachers, for global news, opinion and curriculum projects related to education for sustainable development (ESD).

Around the world in 80 clicks - see the world through a series of 80 webcams. First stop is New York! Use the index to go to the place of your choice. You can print the images as well.

The Earth from space - over 375, 000 images of cities and other Earth landscapes (from flood planes to glaciers) all taken from space. Choose a lower resolution for a quicker download time!

World fact book - information about countries around the world. Find out about a country's people, economy, communications, weather and geography.

Aviaries Farm - visit here to find out all about a working dairy farm. Graphic explanations of the muck heaps and slurry pit!

Zoom school - visit the geography section to find out about the worlds biggest countries; about the animals there; the music and print maps. Have a go at the quiz.

Ordnance Survey Find out about Maps in this fun MapZone by Ordanance Survey

Maps, maps, maps - put in your postcode to view a map of your school, your house, zoom in or out. There are even some aerial photographs to print!

Four seasons - On this site are three school-based projects and a range of environmental resources for schools. Schools can register and take part in these projects by entering data, although the resources, such as the month-by-month guide to what's happening out the window, could be used in school without joining up. This link, by the way, takes you straight to the main menu to avoid the awful music on the 'gateway' page!!

Children's forest - hundreds of interesting facts and ideas for things to do in the forest. Find out what you are likely to find in the branches of a tree...
