Crash test dummies - visit this site about safety |
D&T Online - Information and resources related to electronics, food, mechanisms and others. Quite text-heavy, though. |
Flying Pig - This is a great website if you are doing mechanisms! It is mainly about paper models, and there are some good ideas for making moving models. Included on this site is a section about mechanisms with animations of such mechanisms as the cam, levers, ratchets and more obscure ones too. Although their models are all for sale, each one is illustrated with an animation which shows how the mechanism works. They are quite well priced too... |
Houses Around the World - A simple and straight-forward page showing pictures of houses in different countries. Excellent for the D&T 'shelters' topic!! |
How Stuff Works - This fantastic website from the USA claims to help you "Learn how Everything Works!". It's top 10 articles include how car engines, PC's, lock picks, CD's and jet engines work. As well as searching for how things work, you are invited to ask questions about how (or even if) things work. A must-visit website, although there are quite a lot of adverts to contend with. |
Look Learn and Do - Some ideas for making things such as boats, bubble blowers, kites and windmills. There is also a history section for many of these things as well as monthly fun facts. |
National Society for Education of Art and Design - There is information here about teaching and learning resources, events, in-service education, publications, research, careers in art and design, and more. Links are provided to key art and design education sites worldwide. Part of the NGfL, visitors are required to register as a member. |
RecipieSource - A great place to find recipes from all around the world, helpfully categorised into ethnic group and type. When I visited this site, the webmasters said that they were working hard to bring online a searchable database of recipes. |
Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) - RoSPA's Safety Education department supports those who work with children and young people to promote safety. Their website has a dedicated education section, featuring many resources tailored to fit the National Curriculum. |
Smartbread.com - Tons of stuff about bread and sandwiches from the Wheat Foods Council. Particularly good is the page where you can design your own sandwich. |
Switched On To Safety - This site, launched by Currys, coincides with a major primary school educational campaign to teach children about sensible electrical product use. Teachers can access associated curriculum resources here. |
| The Design and Technology Site - There aren't many websites devoted to D&T, and this one is definitely one of the best. This website is more aimed at KS3; however, it contains numerous information sheets which will be helpful if you are studying or teaching Design Technology. The information sheets cover a wide range and include, the design process, gear systems, electronics, cams, printed circuit boards, PIC microcontrollers / computer control, key words/phrases, structures, vocational work, technology and cultures, basic CNC work. They are intended to provide a valuable resource for teachers and pupils AND they are free. |
